The Biggest Mistake Athletes Make When Trying To Get Faster is... they think they are training for speed when they are really training for strength!

Let Me Quickly Explain

Your Muscles Have 2 Distinct Fibre Types

  • Slow Twitch Muscle Fibres: For strength and endurance.
  • Fast Twitch Muscle Fibres: For speed of muscular contraction.
  • These different muscle fibre types cannot be separated apart from each other and trained individually.
  • You are either training the entire muscle for strength or for speed, but never for strength and speed at the exact same time.
  • Therefore, in order to maximise your speed potential, you need at least two methods of training your muscles: One to train for speed and another for strength.

This is The Misktake Athletes Make...

They spend a huge part of their training in the gym getting stronger not faster.

  • Strength work is very important and you definitely need a program to strengthen the sprinting muscles to apply force to the ground.
  • There was 1 strength exercise included in this series from Leeroy's Leg Strength and Power Program (There are 10 Exercises in total).
  • You also need a speed training program that targets the fast-twitch muscles to contract explosively. This is how you develop speed.
  • 3 of the exercises in this series were taken from Leeroy's speed training program (There are 10 Exercises in total).

Details on How to Access the Full Programs Below.

Speed Has 2 Components

  • Large Ground Contact Forces: To increase speed you need to increase force into the ground to push you forward. This means most of your strength exercises should focus on exerting force into the ground through your feet. Also, sprinting is done on one leg at a time, so some exercises need to be performed with a split stance or on a single leg.
  • Short Ground Contact Times: You need to apply force to the track, pitch or court in the shortest amount of time.

 Therefore:

Greater Ground Contact Forces
Shorter Ground Contact Times
=
INCREASED SPEED

Strength Training Does Not = Speed Training

  • The athlete who can squat or dead-lift the most on the team is not alway the fastest. You need to apply force to the ground in the quickest time possible.
  • Body builders can lift incredible weight but their muscles cannot contract explosively. This is because their training is solely concentrated on increasing strength.
